Why Silent Layoffs Here?

By Jayakishore Bayadi

What I feel a major discrepancy in the corporate India, when compared to the corporate America is the lack of audacity to “Accept the bitter facts”. In the west every thing is open, may it be economy, society, life…or anything. The practice is being seen in the times of recession as well. That’s why the American corporations openly and gallantly state even if they are at the verge of sinking or laying off people or any thing that’s bad is happening to their establishment.

However, it’s not true with regard to corporate India. Many were not at all aware that layoffs are happening in Bangalore as well, till it reached its peak in recent days. According to a news source, several IT/ITes companies are trimmed down on an average of 15 percent of their workforce. Hardly very few companies are recruiting freshers as of now. Over 5000 people have been affected due to U.S downfall driven recession in Bangalore alone, what a source said is to be believed.

That’s what the difference. If you read Forbes or Fortune Magazine nowadays you’ll get a constant update on what’s happening in the U.S economy continuously. Also, there are regular updates on layoffs as well! Sadly, I believe Indian media has failed give a clear picture of what’s really happening in the industry, except a few layoff coverages, that too of from the U.S companies. Of course, it’s not only the fault from the media guys. It’s just that, corporate India itself is hesitant to disclose the reality. In fact, media has tried its best at least to bring out the trends to peoples’ notice, though. However, corporate India should learn that openness is more effective to avoid public disconnect rather than hiding their failures, insecurities…and of course, so called brand image! And in fact, such a move can initiate public debates on what to do and not to do. Recent Citibank episode could be the perfect instance to quote here.

About five months ago, when I was talking to a top Satyam official in a press conference, he told global slowdown has got a silver lining, as this could be an opportunity well. But today nobody is talking about silver linings! The same industry leaders say: “Nobody knows what’s really happening. Nobody has the clue that when this mayhem will end?” Plus, now they are started saying openly that worst is yet to come! Alongside, many are still chanting like things will improve in next quarter…or in the end of 2009 and so on. It seems that when situation becomes hopeless, when there is nothing to hide…you cannot find better answers than these!

The lesson is crystal clear. At tough times like these, leaders should work towards instilling confidence in the industry by being bold and straight rather than just beating around the bush. That will really help.

When Will it End Man?

By Jayakishore Bayadi

It reminds me of my struggling days again. Perhaps, this is even worse than that. When the dark clouds of dotcom bust brooded over Indian IT sector, which affected whole tech job market also in 2001, it created a horrendous fear inside young freshers like us about whether we’ll get a good job or not. Those were the days, when we few friends together walking in the streets of Peenya Industrial area holding multiple copies of our resume and dropping it to every company we spotted and hoped—I may get call from this firm. But it never happened.

Seven winters passed since then. Eventually, slowdown had come down and next few years were real cheerful days for technology sector, which altered whole outlook of Bangalore. Indeed there was a paradigm shift in the way Banaglore lived! For me life has been roller coaster ride all these days. Meanwhile I diverted my career path from technology to media to become a good journalist, especially in developmental journalism or in technology space. I have achieved it. I am a pretty good technology journalist today. It’s going great!

Cut to ongoing recession stuff. All you know is that dooms days are again. Yet another slowdown is on. After effects and miseries can be seen across the globe. In Bangalore alone over 2000 people have lost their jobs! There are lakhs of freshers just out of college in desperation to get a job! Some of most respected companies are collecting money to offer a job! Some companies asking campus recruits to wait for some more time or do a BPO job, for which they are actually not at all recruited! For those who working, appraisals are on hold! Pink slip is hot topic for radio jockeys here! What is painful is that these numbers (pink slips) just keep getting scarier. Just in is that in the U.S, Sun Microsystems is laying off up to 6,000. For Pepsi Bottling it's 3,150. And that Citigroup figure still sends chills down your spine. “So there it seems like no one is safe!” writes Beth Kowitt, a Senior Writer at Fortune Magazine. (Don’t worry now, it’s the U.S figures)

That’s one part. This U.S. recession driven “Bangalore slowdown mayhem” has impacted all. I can recollect pain points of our Malnad districts of Karnataka went through, when areca prices slumped deeply during 2000-2004 period. However, Farmers’ plight is still on but not catching the attention of media, as it has become a banal thing to write about. Being in Bangalore for about 10 years, I can clearly spot the similar trend here as well. Businesses are down heavily. Real estate rates come down profoundly with 10-15 percent drop in the house prices. What is consoling is House rents have stopped going up. Before, it costed about 10-11K per month for a 2 BHK house in Domlur, now such houses are available for around 8K!

What is different this time is that the slowdown is talk of town nowadays. Even first standard kid knows about this today. At this point in time what reminds me is a mythological story of Samudhra manthana. Which is the story of churning of the milk ocean for Amrita – Nectar. Mount Mandaranchal was used as the dasher (churning tool), and Vasuki, the king of serpents, became the churning rope. The gods held the head of the snake, while the demons (Asuras) held its tail, and they pulled on it alternately causing the mountain to rotate, which in turn churned the ocean. However, once the mountain was placed on the ocean, it began to sink. Lord Vishnu in his second incarnation, in the form of a turtle Kurma, came to their rescue and supported the mountain on his back. But before getting the nectar there were so many unwanted things that were came out of the occen.

In contrast, I think the same is happening nowadays. It looks like the global economic engine is being churned out to get the best out of it. Hence I bet once this slow down ends it will create opportunity for all. It happened before as well. It’s just a correction phase I believe. Just think can you afford a flat if it’s beyond your reach? So, Slowdown is helping your dream come true. If you have some money and confidence to invest/ (repay loan) go and buy it. It’s the best time to buy. If you get some good deals for household products buy it now. If you want to invest in stocks this is the opportunity. Warren buffet's theory works better now. When others are greedy, be fearful. When others are fearful, be greedy. The situation is exactly the similar now!

This is for sure. Slowdown will end. Hope lord Vishnu to come in new avatar! But, beware. Slowdowns are going to come in future as well. These are actually testing times. It makes you learn things beyond your routine 9-5 jobs. It’s just passing phase, but also the learning phase. Don’t hesitate to learn and to win!

Time To Build Next Killer App!

By Jayakishore Bayadi

What’s hot now? A friend of mine asked. Christmas is around the corner; climate is chilly, what’s really hot then? Slowdown miseries? May be. I really wonder. Yet, I believe this is the time to build some thing new without worrying about sales part. If you build some thing great, you can sell it when situation turns around.

Leave that apart. Indian governments recent announcement of launching 3G in India is certainly true opportunity. So, what could be the next 'killer application' that could drive mass to go for 3G? In Japan it was the video telephony and downloading music. Will it repeat in India? Well, I believe imagination is only the limitation.

I can bet 3G is an opportunity creator driven by massive broadband penetration, which is extremely good for India. Perhaps it will single-handedly achieve far more in terms of bridging the digital divide than any other measure or policies. You might know at speeds that are almost 10 times the existing technologies 3G could change the very reasons for which we use the tiny pocket device! According to industry pundits, 3G could pour huge opportunity for mobile applications development for entertainment, and for segments like video broadcast and data-intensive services such as stock transactions, e-learning, and telemedicine through wireless communications, and advertisement.

Killer applications need not be entirely new ones. Novelty lies in how the Web apps can be brought into the mobile space. Hence 3G can be an extension of Web 2.0 applications on the PC to the mobile space. I hope bright minds spot opportunities right here. As 3G services will bring better video quality and faster Internet access that will enable easy viewing of advertisements, entrepreneurs can envision the opportunities to build innovative Internet advertisement platforms and applications suitable for the mobile space, just as they built it for the Internet space.

I spot here an excellent opportunity for carriers, ad platform developers to make good money. Also advertisers can reach maximum audience (can be targeted audience) for their ad and mobile users to get their services for relatively cheap! Idea is simple. My gut feeling is that what if carriers offer some discounts to its mobile customers to accept ads they receive via carriers? It’s like sharing the ad revenue with mobile customers. Hence carriers can some extra money from ads. Advertisers can reach maximum-targeted audience. Obviously, developers will gain once the whole ecosystem starts functioning. Consumers can get service for much less cost, provided they are ready to spare some time on viewing ads.

Well, this won’t so rosy as we imagine. Still it could work.

Let me know your opinions on this.

In the eve of Yahoo! Open hack day!

By Jayakishore Bayadi
Thursday, 11, September, Sunnyvale, CA

Yahoo! Announced its this year’s edition of Open hack day this morning. In a press conference Ari Balogh, CTO at Yahoo! invited talented developers to take advantage of Yahoo! Platform to experience a hockey stick kind of turn around in their work they do, i.e., developing applications!

It’s some thing like this. If you are a developer with a dream to impact an insane number of people with your work and don’t want to start small, dazzling only a few bunch of people with your incredible codes, then Yahoo! Open Strategy (Y!OS) should be a perfect platform for you. It’s a cool and one of the most happening event where you can write code that will meaningfully reach millions of users in a single bound. That’s the promise of an open Yahoo!. You can write applications that build on existing Yahoo! applications like Yahoo! Mail, Sports, Search, our front page, mobile, My Yahoo!, etc. to tap into millions of loyal users, and make Internet experience more relevant and useful.

Today more than 500 million users use Yahoo! Services every month. They serve 120 billion page views per month. They spend 235 billion minutes a month on Yahoo! sites. Importantly, some 10 billion relationships exist on user buddy lists and in Yahoo! address books. All that represents a mind-boggling audience for developers.

Says Balogh,“We are in the process of rewiring Yahoo!, building platforms that fundamentally change how Yahoo! works." For instance, future Yahoo! Search will not be just 'content' search, but it will be 'intent' search. "Instead of giving just web links to the related search item, next wave would be understanding the needs of the user and delivering the content exactly what he wants, explains "Prabhakar Raghavan, Head, Yahoo! Research. Perhaps, artificial Intelligence(AI) should be the mantra behind this as every body is after that technology nowadays.

Back to Yahoo!’s open strategy. Being "open" is buzzword these days with lots of Internet companies are on the “open” bandwagon. “Open is not only our strategy, it’s necessity in mobility because of its complexity,” says Marco Boerries, Executive VP at Yahoo!. And with the bandwagon is getting pretty crowded, it seems that Yahoo! has been in the “open” camp for years, starting simple with RSS feeds in 2003. And now, Yahoo! claims that Flickr is the second-most popular API on the Web. And the company is leading the industry’s efforts to embrace open development.

A first taste of Yahoo!’s strategy was SearchMonkey, which lets developers mash up helpful data with their search engine results. A Japanese restaurant would no longer be a simple link. Instead, it could include a photo, address, ratings, reviews, and links to online reservations. Now, Search Monkey available and already attracting bunch of users across the globe.

And it doesn’t stop there. Y!OS will let developers make Yahoo! portable so that everywhere you go, a more relevant, social and useful online experience is available to you. Shopping on a third-party site, Web on your TV (TV widgets), Yahoo! One Search, mobile sites exclusively for mobiles with faster…beautiful experience… powerful features and many more applications in the pipeline. Just wait and watch there’s plenty more to come in the months ahead!

That’s why, though it looks like following in the footsteps of Facebook, Google, Y!OS is basically the rewiring of Yahoo, which would make perhaps make the consumer experience more social. Well, with Google’s friend list growing, Yahoo! should go social before it is too late right?

Finally i'm in America!

By Jayakishore Bayadi
@Sunnyvale CA, USA

It wasn’t so bad as expected. After a day long flight via Bangalore-Chennai-Singapore-Seoul-SFO....I expected a day long jet log. Leaving an instance of going to sleep in bathroom on the day of arrival there is nothing much body related troubles! Interestingly my body clock adjusted to the ‘local settings’ immediately and I had a nice good night sleep! Thank god!

Currently, I’m here in Sunnyvale California, right here in front of Yahoo! office at Sunnyvale. My hotel, Sheraton Sunnyvale is just a 5 minutes drive from here. Today is second day in the great tech savvy United States of America, really the great business people. Cool people!

Well, my first international experience was quite cheerful. I think anybody who wanna grow must have an international experience. Exploring the unknown place is quite interesting and challenging…but too much of exploration will burn your pockets…spending $100 is not just like spending Rs.100 right? So, I will have to continuously keep in mind that each dollar spend here will make about Rs.50 less rich in India! Plus, unknown culture, profoundly dissimilar food habits will add to your challenges list! Check out some snaps as well posted along with this blogpost.

Obama Calling!

By Jayakishore Bayadi

Hey guys! How are you doing? Life is becoming lot busy these days. But I don’t have an ACER to make it easy, but have DELL to make it simpler! Iam contented that life is cool, happening, dynamic nowadays with a huge room for learning. I thank lord GANESHA for every thing and by the way, I wish you all HAPPY GANESHA! Belated though!

Well, Iam very pleased to share one of the finest moments in my life. Guess what? You guessed it wrong. Not marriage. Finally, after my “uncertain visa episode” achieved a nail biting finish last week, for the first time, Iam flying to the United States next week, that is on 9th mid night. Purpose: needless to say, again to attend a two-day techie conference namely, Open Hack Day to be held on September 12 – 13, 2008 in YAHOO! headquarters situated at SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA.

Let me tell you what this Open Hack day all about. The event that is open to all Yahoo! employees and outside developers from all over the world. During this time, what Yahoo! does is that opens up all of its products, platforms and APIs to participants (Ethical hackers) so they can build onto Yahoo! UI libraries, product APIs, and more with their great ideas. Open Hack Day will take this mission to make Yahoo! as open as possible to an external group of developers, giving them the scale and infrastructure that only Yahoo! can provide, to see what they can come up with.

In September 2006, over 400 people participated in the first Open Hack Day in Sunnyvale, and since then Open Hack Days have been held all over the globe, including London and Bangalore. Yahoo! is inviting anyone who has a great idea for a hack to use its resources - the scale and infrastructure that only Yahoo! can provide - to bring it to life. They are expecting hundreds of developers from Silicon Valley and beyond to storm Yahoo!'s Sunnyvale campus to hack, build, create, and have fun.

Interesting fact is that Open hack day will start at 6.00pm Friday, September 12 with activities like live entertainment, dinner/drinks/mingling and partying. Meanwhile overnight hack session and camping will continue into Saturday morning. On Saturday afternoon the best Idea will be rewarded.

Only select Broadcast media, print media and influencers will be invited to attend and cover the event and Iam a part of this contingent.

Well, keep visiting this blogsite, Iam planning to do a live blogging from California.

I feel, it’s little tough to resist Obama’s call!!

Smokers=Criminals?

By Jayakishore Bayadi

“This is my place.Who are you to ask me to don’t smoke here?”

A chain smoker tenant just beside my room replied without any hitch, when I requested him not smoke here instead go to terrace…

He never bothered. I requested him again. Complained to the owner. He warned him. But it didn’t work. Then I decided to change my room. Iam a happy man now. I can breath ‘polluted’ fresh air in my new home, at least not contaminated by Cigarette smoke!

I feel pity for such brats. They can’t handle stress without Cigarette. They can’t even shit without it. They are addicted to it. They already become a slave of a bad habit. They may feel they can conquer the world while smoking, but in real they can’t. They are the most stupid, low morale, not-so-confident individuals I believe.
I really feel sad that government is bringing a new law to contain smokers, as it does to curb criminals. That means, Smokers=Criminals! So sad my dear smokers… that include our so-called great celebrities as well!

PTI reports that the government is empowering school principals, postmen, railway stationmasters, even your boss to book you if you're caught smoking in a public place after Oct 2 - the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The health ministry has already sent the rule for gazette notification and will make it public in the second week of September.

'The government is yet to approve a fine of Rs.2,000 for those caught smoking in public,' said a senior health ministry official. 'So we are implementing the new Smoking in Public Places Rules 2008 with the old fine amount - up to Rs.200.'
The new rule will also expand the definition of public places from government buildings to include all office buildings, hospitals, schools, colleges, railway stations, airports, bus stands, hotels and restaurants.

'With the public notification, we will empower principals of schools, colleges, stationmasters, postman, airport authorities to challan (book) those smoking in public places. Once caught, the smoker will have to pay Rs.200 or whatever he has if he is carrying less than that amount,' the official told PTI. 'These people have better access to public places and their involvement will work as community participation to reduce smoking in the country.

'The public notification will empower top officials in private firms to challan their employees. The challan money will go to the revenue department of the state government concerned,' the official added. The modalities will be finalized before the public notification.

To start the process, the official said, in the last one week they fined eight employees of the Nirman Bhawan, the building that houses the health ministry, urban development ministry, and some other government offices.
Hundreds of thousands of people lose their lives due to smoking related diseases in India every year. They are at risk from all cardio-vascular diseases like heart attack and stroke and cancer.

When will these spoilt brats will learn? When death starts knocking his door?

TRAI gives jolt to iPhone fans in India!

By Jayakishore Bayadi

Though iPhone mania is on its peak, across the globe, Telecom regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has given another jolt to iPhone fans in India. As TRAI has increased base price of 3G auctions for participating companies, industry experts feel that this would make 3G services in the country costlier, which will affect prospectus of iPhone 3G in India.

Here is how. To experience the “real iPhone 3G features” to the maximum, it needs 3G networks, which is currently not available in India. But as of now, AirTel and Vodafone who will be launching iPhone 3G here will offer iPhone 3G services through their existing 2G networks. So, when India will see the 3G networks materialized sometime in the future, service providers for the iPhone will switch to the 3G networks. According to an industry source, at that time 3G tariffs will be much higher than anticipated, which will be inevitable for service providers as TRAI has made them to cough up more money for 3G spectrum.

Last Friday the TRAI proposed to raise the base price for operators participating in the auction of 3G spectrum. The base price for 3G services has been revised up wards from Rs.1400 crore to Rs. 2200 crore for a Pan-India license. “Which will certainly affect 3G tariffs in the future,” said an Analyst while talking to SiliconIndia.

Because of its higher voice capacity, 3G services will facilitate the delivery of far more cost-effective voice; the Internet and data transport services with much lesser cost than 2G. However, this will happen only if operators do not have to pay exorbitant prices for 3Gspectrum. But now the operators who need 3G spectrum need to pay higher base price, which could lead to high costs and tariffs, which in turn completely negate the tremendous capacity advantage that 3G has to offer.

The key to the success of 3G will lie in its price, that is, if it has to become a mass service. It can be recalled that 3G did not take off in the west because of the exorbitant prices attached to its spectrum, which made the service unaffordable and restricted to a niche market.

The Indian consumer is highly price sensitive, as has been amply demonstrated in the case of 2G services, where exponential growth took place as competition increased and tariffs dropped. The same principles will hold good for 3G as well. Affordability of 3G services will be a critical factor in the success of 3G in India.
Airtel and Vodafone announced a tie-up with Apple recently to bring the iPhone 3G to India. The companies already started pre-registering customers for the iPhone 3G, and ever since, offices and blogs have been abuzz with discussions on how Apple’s new iPhone 3G will be bundled with two year contract with the service provider, like in the U.S., will fare in the India’s mass mobile market.

Hats off to HC for making our BULLSHIT literary savants to understand the importance of ENGLISH!

By Jayakishore Bayadi
Finally honorable HC passed the message loud and clear. English is necessary in the present world. Now, the private schools can teach in English and parents can choose the medium of instruction for their children.

Ruled the great Karnataka High Court on Wednesday. Hats off to HC for such a landmark judgement. The Times of India Reports: The full Bench of the Karnataka High Court headed by Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph and comprising Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice N Kumar termed the Karnataka government’s 1994 order making Kannada a compulsory medium of instruction in primary schools as unconstitutional and ruled that parents had the freedom to choose the language for their wards.

The Karnataka Unaided Schools’ Managements Association had challenged the government’s order in the court in 1994. The ruling is welcome, considering parents had little choice in the matter for several years. The broader feeling is that globalization makes it imperative for nations to share English as a linguistic medium. A common language in areas such as science, technology and business cannot only augment efficiency levels, but also open up employment and entrepreneurial opportunities. Secondly, it’ll go a long way in removing the inequity in educational avenues for children coming from low-income families. Why should they be deprived of a choice? All this, however, should not in any way affect the promotion and growth of Kannada about which the court has given some suggestions.

In the 318-page judgment, the court observed: “The government policy compelling children studying in other government recognized schools (private) to have primary education only in the mother tongue or the regional language is violative of Article 19(1)(g), 26 and 30(1) of the Constitution. If the parents want their children to have primary education in English they are not committing any crime. It is neither illegal nor opposed to public policy. The choice of medium of instruction is left to parents and children.’’

MY PERSPECTIVE: In my opinion, this is a landmark judgment because; there are lots of guys and gals in our semi urban and rural area in interior parts of the state who are deprived of studying in English medium. The situation is so pathetic that they don’t know even how to write a Leave Letter properly. If government brings in COMPULSURY KANNADA MEDIUM RULE, there is a chance that those guys will not get any chance to learn things in English. And every one knows that today’s globalized world needs ‘global talent’ who can deliver global quality.

It is a well-known fact that those who studied in the Kannada medium always struggle to deliver quality work in today’s corporate world’s requirements and hence suffer a lot. They are looked down on par with the guys who know very good communicative English, just because they don’t know how to communicate (verbal as well as written)in English effectively, despite having groovy potential to deliver the global quality work.

For Chameleon natured, so called eminent Kannada writers like U R Ananthamurthy, Champa, and many others, who advocates or press for imposition of “Compulsory Kannada medium”, might have got jolt from this historical judgment. May be, for next few weeks, our Kannada Press fraternity will run a massive campaign on this subject containing the opinions (normally it will be always a hokum) of these “Nonsensical” writers or supposed “Think tanks”, who always deliver “Bullshit” or copied stuffs from western literatures in the name of “Creativity” and “Inspiration”.

We had great literary personalities like Shivaram Karanth, Masti Venkatesha Aiyangar, and DVG who ‘really’ contributed for Kannada literature. But important thing we have to remember here is they all lived what they wrote! They were never Chameleons. It’s our misfortune that we don’t have such celebs between us now except a few like S.L.Bhyrappa.

My sincere request to honorable government is that please do not listen to the nonsense writers (most of them send their children to Baldwins, St. Josephs or Bishop Cottons) like Baraguru Ramachandrappa, Champa, silly politicians like Vatal Nagaraj, or members of Kannada 'Oraatagarara' Sangha, if I am correct, Kannada Rakshana Vedike and other goons operating in the name of Kannada. Because ultimately they won’t suffer, as they just want PR in the media to sell their crap.

However, the real sufferers are those in interior parts of our state who really need education in global standard to conquer the world. And to achieve that, they need only ENGLISH, a good practical ENGLISH, nothing else!

Please let them learn what they want. Let them build their future on their own.
Mr. Yeddyurappa, please live, and let live.

A trillion dollar question!

By Jayakishore Bayadi

Yet again, it’s been very long time since I interacted with you guys! Even I haven’t writen any thing exclusive for my blog. I just copied the stuff from here and there to make “look like as if it’s an article” to post it here! Well, you know one thing? I began blogging to explore my self. And to express “The exploration(!)”in words and to dipict the things which excites me and triggers my thoughts. I wanted to and want to do blogging regularly. But I don’t know why every day, I end up in, “hey man…let’s do it tomorrow!”

There is a reason for such tomorrow syndromes. As you all know, Bangalore really sucks folks! The vehicular traffic, pollution, work pressure makes you feel like you can’t do any thing you want unless you are destined to do it! Obviously, or perhaps you all know and might have been experiencing the same in your respective professional lives.— It’s the “Time factor” which is turning to be an impediment to do my own special things. Some times, I believe it’s just bemoaning on my own for not able to do the things and to conceal myself from a kind of insecured feeling, as my slothfulness be ‘one of the’ biggest reason for not executing my own things effectively within available time frame!

I have an IT friend who keeps lamenting on and on. “See, I have to get up at 7pm to rerach the office at 9.30am. In the evening I leave the office at 8.30 (Normally!)and reach home at 9.45pm or 10 some times. Then, ofcourse, I eat, drink…watch TV..tired and will go to bed. Where is the time to enjoy or for entertainment? Life has gone stressfull and humdrum always. There is no thrill despite getting a bomb. Stress factor is barring the creativity at work. Coding, the work what I do in the office, I believe is nothing less than a clerical work. Not only that, it’s monotounous, a kind of boring, stressfull, yet ishould say it’s enjoyable if you have a liking towards it. Ofcourse, I like it. But I don’t like just coding you know…Iam not married to my company…yaar. I wanna read, write and even blog…There is no void in my mind other than codes nowadays! Literally, I eat-sleep-dream codes these days…!”

May be, this is how the life of any bachelor techie or a professional who work for a corporate, living in the city moves on everyday. He always hates going to office. He dislikes the days named Monday to Friday. Feeling antipathy towards work, detesting the boss, peers and tightfisted customers is his mundane routine. When weekends come, he says “Thank god..it’s Sunday..” But, it’s worth mentioning, he still performs his work admirably, atleast for the sake of surviving in the job!

I wonder some times, is this the kind of life we wanted to live? Or why our lives just going out of control in this so called hell, filled with always scampering creatures, who doesn’t have time for their own..let alone for others! May be this is not the new thing Iam writing on. But some how it deals with every NEW city dwellers life and happenings around him.

Now, listen to my another friend, who has the routine similar to my lamenting friend. But a little divergence reflects in his ever sparkling face whenever I meet him. We named him as “God of workoholics”(I believe if you are always happy, then you are God). He works a lot and in the mean time he enjoys it immensely. Amusingly, whenever he gets time he leaves Bangalore to some hilly stations like Melukote, Madikeri, Ooty or Pondy to recharge himself! He is a great voyager as well. Interestingly, he is also writing a book on trekking, which will be out in next six months time. Iam not permitted to tell who he is, but I can promise, I’ll write about his book in this space by the end of this year.

He says, “Every person is not fortunate enough to achieve what they loved or wanted. To illustrte this with a beguiling example, “You may love a girl. But she may not be interested in you…even if she is interested, she may not be interested in marrying you!”

Yet, life should move ahead right? “Hence, you need to accept all such heartbreaking things which come and go in our life span. So, say, you’ll marry a girl after. Now, to make your life happier you’ll need to love her from deep heart. This is even true for her as well. Now, apply the same analogy to work life as well. Easily, you’ll get the answer.”

So, even then if you really wanna get rid off the things, you should be ready for “Annulment” as well. It may look like a simple solution. But sadly such things are becoming common nowadays! In workplace as well as in personal space. Nevertheless, do you think you’ll be happy afterwards? Will your search for happiness end there?

Indeed a trillion dollar question!
Iam still wandering to get the right answer.

Grievance forum from Govt of India

A Mail from Nagesh Hegde

Government of India has instigated an online Grievance forum. This is a rare thing happening in INDIA.The govt. wants people to use this tool to highlight the problems theyfaced while dealing with Government officials or departments likePassport Office, Electricity board, BSNL/MTNL, Railways etc.I know many people will say that these things don't work in India, butthis actually works as one of our colleague in CSC found.

The guy I'm talking about lives in Faridabad. Couple of months back, the FaridabadMunicipal Corporation laid new roads in his area and the residentswere very happy about it. But 2 weeks later, BSNL dug up the newlylaid roads to install new cables which annoyed all the residentsincluding this guy. But it was only this guy! Who used the abovelisted grievance forum to highlight his concern.

And to his surprise,BSNL and Municipal Corporation of Faridabad were served a show becausenotice and the guy received a copy of the notice in one week.Government has asked the MC and BSNL about the goof up as it's clearthat both the government departments were not in sync at all.So use this grievance forum and educate others who don't know aboutthis facility. This way we can at least raise our concerns instead ofjust talking about the ' System ' in India.Invite your friends to contribute for many such happenings. PLEASE SPREAD THIS MESSAGE IF U WANT OUR INDIA TO CHANGE.

The buzz called Startup City!!

By Jayakishore Bayadi

Whenever you think of IT, immediately the reflection comes in one’s mind is of Infosys, Wipro, TCS and such other bigwig companies. But many still does’nt know that there are many tiny companies or startups with brilliant ideas which may revolutinize the whole ecosystem. For instance, Google, which was a minuscule startup a decade ago now a billion dollor company. Take our own Infosys, a startup which began its journey from a garage of Narayana Murthy’s house years ago has now become a legendery corporation reflecting the India’s capability to take on the world, may be a old story but still a fresh inspiration for wanna entrprenurs.

Indeed, the Indian IT market is truly hot today. Anyone with experience has a multitude of opportunities to choose from. If you want to start your entrepreneurial journey there are plenty of possibilities to challenge the biggies with innovative solutions or products being a tiny firm. Today world turned its head towards indian ventures and entrepreneurial stories. Despite this, there are thousands of startup companies which can rock the world with their sparkling dreams struggling to make it. Some of them don’t know how to do it. Some of them don’t know how they can make it big. Some don’t know how to approach a Venture capitalist or bankers for funding. They struggle in basic things. They really lack mentorship.

It is said that good things come in small packages. There are over 800 startup companies in Bangalore alone. There are several others across India. If their number is an eyebrow raiser, the technologies they working on are mindblowing. But the sad reality is that the larger pool of technology professionals have no clue of the innovation that happens in their own city!
Of course, startups have to face challenges in building products, technology, brand, culture and of course, attracting bright talent. Big companies can manage as they have financial muscle. What do startups do? Take heart.

Other than this, there are still big challenges for startups in India, including some cultural trends that work against recruiting employees. With even average employees getting 15% raises a year, and stars getting two and three times that much. Prashanth Vaibhav Mishra, a former GE employee, now, co-founder of Dhanax, a five -person, six months old Internet-based micro lending startup in Bangalore admits: “Working for GE was great ... but I wanted to work on something I love. Sometimes I wonder, I think I could be living somewhere else, for example. But I think this is more important.”

Interestingly, even getting a good marriage proposal is a hurdle if you are working in a startup. Because in Indian society, parents always look for stability, salary and marriage prospects for their children from their job. “They are little skeptical about entrepreneurship and such other adventures,” says Siva Cotipalli, Co founder, Dhanax.

Probably, that’s the reason why a typical Indian bride will think twice before accepting a marriage proposal by an entrepreneur. Even in matrimonial columns you rarely get to see grooms ‘working in a startup’. Of course, founding your own company may be exciting, challenging and remunerative. But Beware! In India founding a startup or even working for startups could be “Risky” to your marriage prospects, as they may prefer to see IBM, Wipro or Infosys on your business card!

Other than this, the biggest challenge is one of skepticism that it can be done from India. Product management, domain expertise and so on are often quoted as impediments. Over time, there developed this attitude that Indian software equals outsourcing, and that has been a hurdle. That attitude manifests itself in the way people prefer a presumed “safe” job in an IT services company than in a “risky” product company. Overcoming that kind of skepticism is one of the biggest challenges.

Some things are tougher for startups in India than in the United States. Simple things like finding a lawyer that's used to working with cash-strapped startups can be tough. But the change that has taken place in just a matter of three years is phenomenal by any standards. We see several senior executives quit their well-paying jobs to start on their own in India. The good news is that most of the entrepreneurs are not looking at the U.S. as their initial market. They are trying to address problems relevant to India, which surely calls for innovation. Communities like TiE, Nasscom, NEN, Proto.in, Kickstart, Startup Saturdays, Open Coffee Clubs and Barcamps have actively contributed to the vibrancy we see today. Also today there are lot of startup groups, communities are coming up in Bangalore. Such as “Sunday morning coffee gathering” of entrepreneurs, where people share ideas get inspired and bolster each other's resolve twice a month.

Surprisingly very few of the top startups mentioned in the U.S. media have engineering centers in India. This, probably, is one indicator that there is something missing in our ecosystem. The day when more than 50 percent of the top startups in the world have their R&D setups in India we can proudly say that we have arrived. It should be noted that the R&D centers of the U.S. based startups also contribute to the product ecosystem that thrives here today.

In our endeavor to help the ecosystem, Bangalore based The SmartTechie, a technology magazine is organizing a unique event called The SmartTechie Startup City in Bangalore on Saturday May 24, 2008 at Nimhans Convention Center in Bangalore. This is a technology showcase event wherein cool startups demo the products they are building.
